Custom Iron-On Embroidered Patches for Apparel and Brand Projects

Blue cloud and yellow lightning patch shown from the front and back

Custom iron-on embroidered patches combine a stitched design with heat seal backing for application to suitable fabrics. LOVECOLOUR manufactures patches for apparel brands, uniform suppliers, promotional product companies and other bulk buyers. We review your artwork, finished size, thread colors, border and intended fabric before confirming the production approach. The goal is a patch that looks right as a sample and remains practical to reproduce across the order.

What Makes an Iron-On Embroidered Patch?

The front of the patch carries an embroidered logo or design. A finished edge defines its shape, while a heat-activated layer on the back provides the iron-on attachment option. Size, stitch density, thread direction, background fabric and edge construction all affect the finished appearance.

LOVECOLOUR supports custom embroidery, precision contour cutting and backing application. If your project calls for a different attachment method, browse our custom patches range before finalizing the specification.

Custom Options That Matter to the Finished Patch

  • Finished size: Choose a size that fits the garment placement and gives lettering enough room to remain readable.
  • Shape: Standard outlines and irregular logo shapes can be reviewed for the most suitable edge finish.
  • Thread and background colors: Provide artwork and color references; approve the physical result when brand color is critical.
  • Embroidery coverage: Decide whether background fabric should remain visible or be covered by stitches.
  • Border: A merrowed edge produces a raised stitched outline; a precision-cut edge can follow a more complex contour.
  • Backing: Specify the receiving garment and fabric when requesting iron-on backing.
  • Order presentation: Share any sorting, labeling or packing needs before quotation.

Manufacturer Insight: Check the Artwork at Actual Patch Size

A logo that looks clear on a monitor may behave differently when reduced to a small embroidered patch. Before digitizing, we review letter size, narrow gaps, fine lines, stitch direction, border structure and cutting lines. Enlarging the patch or simplifying a detail can sometimes solve a clarity problem before it becomes a bulk production problem.

If your design relies on very small lettering or intricate lines, a woven construction may express those details more clearly. Send your file through our artwork review process so the recommendation can be based on your actual design.

Choose the Edge Around Your Design

Three circular patches demonstrating no border, embroidered and merrowed edges

A merrowed border suits many regular outlines and gives the patch a defined, raised edge. For an irregular silhouette, a precision-cut edge may follow the artwork more closely. The decision should account for the smallest corners, overall patch size and appearance you want on the garment. See our embroidery process page for more on the construction.

Will Iron-On Backing Work on Your Fabric?

Heat seal backing needs suitable heat, pressure and contact with the receiving fabric. A patch should not be described as suitable for every garment. Fabric composition, coatings, stretch and the construction of the finished item can affect application. If the project uses a new or sensitive material, provide a fabric swatch or finished garment for an application test before bulk production.

For workwear or items exposed to frequent handling and washing, discuss the intended use with your garment decorator. Perimeter stitching may be appropriate in addition to heat application. Press settings should be confirmed for the actual backing and receiving fabric rather than copied from a generic instruction sheet.

Iron-On or Sew-On: Which Should You Specify?

Buying question Iron-On Backing Sew-On Attachment
How is it attached? With suitable heat and pressure With stitches securing the patch to the item
What must be checked? Heat tolerance, fabric finish and press access Sewing access, placement and the receiving material
When is it useful? When the item can be pressed evenly and application testing is approved When heat application is unsuitable or stitching is part of the product specification

What Affects the Bulk Price?

Finished size, order quantity, stitch count, embroidery coverage, color changes, edge construction, backing and packaging all affect the quote. Two patches with the same dimensions can require different production work: a simple logo on visible background fabric is different from a design with dense stitches across the full surface.

For a useful price comparison, send the same artwork and specifications at the quantities you are considering. The unit price, sample requirements and any packing work can then be reviewed together. Read more about pricing and MOQ.

Sample Approval and Bulk Quality Control

Before approving a sample, check the actual lettering, thread colors, proportions, dimensions, edge and backing. Pantone references are useful production guides, but screen colors and embroidery thread do not necessarily appear identical. When color is critical, approve a physical sample.

For bulk orders, the approved sample and final specifications provide the reference for checking stitching, color, size, border, backing placement, quantity and packing. If the patches will be attached to one particular garment, include application testing in the approval stage. Learn about our sample approval and quality control processes.

Applications for Business Buyers

  • Apparel brands: Add a stitched logo to suitable jackets, shirts or accessories while managing garment and patch production as separate steps.
  • Uniform suppliers: Specify identification or company logo patches for an ongoing apparel program.
  • Promotional product companies: Develop custom artwork for campaigns, branded merchandise or client kits.
  • Distributors: Order repeatable designs for downstream decoration or resale.
  • Event organizers: Coordinate patch design, quantity and packing with an event distribution plan.

From Artwork to Bulk Production

  1. Project details: Share the artwork, finished size, quantity, receiving fabric, required date and destination.
  2. Feasibility review: Confirm the embroidery details, border, thread colors and backing.
  3. Quotation and sample: Review the quote and approve the agreed proof or physical sample.
  4. Application check: Test the patch on the target fabric when heat attachment is an important project requirement.
  5. Bulk production and inspection: Produce against the approved specifications and check the finished patches before packing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you produce my own logo as an iron-on embroidered patch?

Yes. Send your artwork and intended finished size. We will review whether the lettering, fine lines, border and backing suit the design.

Can the patch have an irregular shape?

Yes, irregular shapes can be reviewed. The outline determines whether a merrowed or precision-cut style edge is more suitable.

Can you match Pantone colors?

Pantone codes can guide thread selection. If exact brand appearance matters, approve a physical sample because thread, material and screen colors can differ.

Is iron-on backing suitable for every garment?

No. The receiving fabric must tolerate the required heat and pressure. Test the approved patch on the actual fabric before bulk application.

Should I choose embroidery or a woven patch for small text?

Embroidery gives a raised stitched texture. Woven construction may be better for very small text and fine detail. The decision depends on the actual artwork and patch size.

What is the MOQ?

The MOQ for this design is confirmed after its size, construction and quantity are reviewed. Lower quantities may affect the unit price.

Can I approve a sample before bulk production?

Yes, sample arrangements can be discussed for the project. A physical sample is especially useful for new artwork, important brand colors or an unfamiliar receiving fabric.

What information should I send for a quotation?

Send the artwork, size, estimated quantity, color references, receiving fabric, backing, packing requirements, delivery destination and required date.

Before it is quoted

What applies to every custom order.

These are the general rules for custom work from this factory, not figures for this item. Where the specification above carries a buying or lead-time note for this product, that note is the one that applies to it.

01

Artwork review

Logo proportion, small text, fine lines, stitch direction, density, thread colour, border, final size and backing are checked at the finished size before anything is quoted. If the artwork does not suit the process, we say so and propose the size, the simplification or the process that will hold it.

02

Sample approval

A physical sample is produced and approved before bulk, and the approved sample becomes the production standard for that run and for every reorder. Custom samples are usually chargeable.

03

Minimum order

A standard MOQ applies to each product; for many custom items it starts at around 100 pcs, with limited flexibility by process and order structure. Below the standard MOQ the unit price can rise, so the figure is confirmed for your specification rather than published as one number.

04

Lead time

Bulk production usually takes 7–12 days after artwork approval. Rush orders are reviewed case by case against capacity, material, process, artwork status, sample requirements and shipping method, and are not promised before that check.

05

Inspection

Colour matching, logo proportion, small-text clarity, stitching and thread colour, dimensions, backing, material, quantity and packing are compared with the approved sample, and how deep the inspection goes follows the risk of the order.

06

Packing & shipping

Individual, OPP or custom bag, backer card, barcode, SKU label, carton mark, retail, neutral and white-label packing — packed for the route the goods take after the factory.

Product inquiry

Ask about this product.

Send what you have — a logo file, a photograph of a sample you already own, or a written specification. If you are not sure which process or which backing this product needs, say what it will be used for and we will tell you which one holds the design.

What the inquiry should carry

  • Artwork or logo file
  • Size
  • Quantity
  • Material and backing
  • Packaging requirement
  • Application and destination
  • Required delivery date

A new inquiry is normally answered within about an hour in working time. If the artwork is not ready yet, send the brief without it — the quotation follows once the specification and the file are confirmed, and nothing is guessed at in the meantime.
